Manufacturing productivity up 6.3 percent in first quarter

Jobless rates are up, but manufacturing rates are rising too? How can you train your current workforce to meet the current market needs? ITC Learning offers a catalogue of courses to aide training skills.

A report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics shows a 6.3 rise in manufacturing output in the first quarter of 2011. Hours worked and compensation grew by 3.3 and 2.6 percent respectively. Unit labor costs, however, have declined by 1.4 percent, but that is simply because the output growth is up by 9.7 percent.

Surprising, however, was the revelation that jobless rates in the labor market actually jumped to an eight-month high overall. It has shaken the confidence of Wall Street, and could fall further when the month-long report is released on Friday, May 5. The current figures estimate that the jobless figure rose from 431,000 to 474,000.

This presents an interesting dilemma to business owners. They themselves may choose to level off new hires, but that doesn’t mean that companies won’t still be looking to manufacture goods. Instead, maybe businesses will start pursuing ways to improve the existing workforce to meet the needs of production.

Fortunately ITC Learning offer s a robust library of continuing education classes for businesses aiming to outfit their current workforce with a new set of training skills.
